Walking the Toy Aisle

It’s back! I know, it’s been too long since I’ve done a Walking the Toy Aisle post. In my defense, there hasn’t been much of note in the stores lately. Now that Fall is nearly here, we’re seeing a few new things hitting the aisles.

Our Generation was highly represented at our local Target. The doll below comes with a bunch of cool movie themed props.

The Barbie stock wasn’t too exciting, unfortunately.

This Fashionista below does have a pretty cool look. Notice the details in her hair.

While I like that Barbie is partnering with National Geographic, I am not impressed with the doll. Her face paint looks flat and unrealistic, her outfit isn’t flattering to her body type and in general, she’s just not very pretty.

I wish Mattel would retire the purple hair. We’ve seen this multiple times now on Barbie and Skipper. The Fashionista below is an example of a doll that just wasn’t designed very well, in my opinion. I would have preferred her to have a more natural hairstyle (she could totally rock an afro) and maybe a different lip color.

Stacie has some articulation. That’s pretty awesome.

Some of Target’s end caps had me wondering if I’d time traveled between aisle 3 and 4.

To be honest, the only Super Hero Girls I like are Wonder Woman, Katana and Bumble Bee. Super Girl’s expression and weird eyes are just– a bit odd looking!

LOL Surprise Furniture is small, but kind of cute. I think the car looks cute! Reminds me of my Pinky ST car.

Kandi Kids are way bigger than I expected! I like their big sparkly eyes!

I have to give Boxy Girls a lot of credit- they’ve expanded way more than I expected them to!

Also, Jojo is still ruling the toy aisles. Here’s her Hairdorable!

We didn’t see all the BTS dolls, but saw a few! Definitely worth a look due to their unique faces and hairstyles.

  1. My store had some of the new Barbies with the wheelchair. We rarely ever get the good stuff since I live in a small town so i was happy to see them. Picked up a fashionista I hadn’t seemed before. The price is now 6.44… or something close. Glad to see them priced closer to the quality.

  2. I am a child of the 60’s and love and collect my Barbies still, BUT very disappointed in today’s version of Barbie, very cheap in quality and she’s just lost her magic, I’m glad my mom got me the best of what we had from my day andI still have most, I do have Fashionistas in my collection because some are cute and love the variations in shapes sizes, cultures BUT Mattel needs to do a lot of work and need bring back the magic!

  3. Our Generation had some really cute ones the last time I was there! I had to look at Target’s website to remember which one tempted me the most: Heloisa Lolo, the Regular Yoga Doll. I loved her colorful outfit, wavy reddish hair, and pretty green eyes. I’m not sure how new she is but she was new to me. I also loved the pajama outfit, Unicorn Wishes, for the plush it comes with and the color scheme. I did end up buying a small OG/Lori clothes set for other fashion dolls though. I’m glad they still make the mini line but one of these days I’ll probably get an OG.

I really want some of the new fashionistas but I need to see them in person. Sometimes the ones I like best online disappoint and others are more exciting. I think I like the green-haired girl more than expected, I love her face and style, but I was uncertain about the green. Still not sure but maybe with a different outfit??

I agree about the purple-haired girl! I love her romper, body-type, and skin-tone but the hair color needed to be lighter or darker, her eye color looks washed out, and I agree that her lip color is a huge miss. It matches her outfit but it looks off. In general, I hate a lot of the lip colors they pick for their dolls. Either it’s too saturated, it’s a strange choice for the skin-tone (I hate some of the random purple lipsticks personally but sometimes shades of red and pink feel off too, as in this case), or it’s on a kid/baby…

While I like that Barbie is partnering with National Geographic, I am not impressed with the doll. Her face paint looks flat and unrealistic, her outfit isn’t flattering to her body type and in general, she’s just not very pretty.

Sadly, I have to agree. Her eyes look glassy and it’s a shame. She could’ve been very cute. I’d also say, ironically, this might be one of the few instances where I’d prefer a brighter red. It’d give her a pop of color and a bit more life.

Stacie has some articulation. That’s pretty awesome.

I’m still so disappointed that her elbows aren’t articulated though! She’s basically the same doll as the one they had on the scooter a few years back. I also wish Chelsea had articulated knees. If they’d just included that version in this pack, I’d forgive Stacie’s limitations a little better. I’m sure it’d ramp up the price but I hate how they cheap out on the articulation in these sport-related sets. The same can be said for the Barbie mentors with the Kelly-style tots… The Barbie Gymnastics Coach Doll Play-set versus the Barbie Flippin’ Fun Gymnast. I know I’m not really the target audience and they have to cut costs somehow but it irks me. 😛

I really hope someday they make Made to Move versions of all the sisters.

Some of Target’s end caps had me wondering if I’d time traveled between aisle 3 and 4.

lol I saw that! Nostalgia is definitely a selling point this decade.

To be honest, the only Super Hero Girls I like are Wonder Woman, Katana and Bumble Bee. Super Girl’s expression and weird eyes are just– a bit odd looking!

Yes! Although Bumble Bee’s legs have painted on black leggings which is annoying. She’s still super cute; I might buy her and Wonder Woman. I think the masks/glasses threw me off for the others and I’d like them better if those weren’t on. The box art is fantastic but hard to translate into doll-form so I accept there would be some changes. They kinda did Super Girl dirty though… she looks out of it and would’ve been served really well by an eye-roll or otherwise side-glancing eyes. She doesn’t have enough attitude!

Incidentally, I think the She-Ra dolls have a similar problem with vacant-eye syndrome but Catra suffered the least (of who I saw in person) so I bought her. XD

LOL Surprise Furniture is small, but kind of cute. I think the car looks cute! Reminds me of my Pinky ST car.

I saw someone else review two of those sets and the car looks fantastic! I’m deeply tempted by it and will surely buy it eventually. There’s a cute little red car-shaped wagon that attaches in the back too. The other furniture is cute and unique but I might pass. (I have an addiction to Calico Critters and I’m still working on a nice display of them and their furniture as-is.)

Kandi Kids are way bigger than I expected! I like their big sparkly eyes!

o_o; Whoa. Yeah. Oh wow, I love the pastel rainbow hair on that one on the back! *ponders* OMG they remind me of Vanellope from Wreck-It Ralph. I wonder if they were inspired by the racers? Ooooh, I wonder if a custom Vanellope would be really cute? c_c

I have to give Boxy Girls a lot of credit- they’ve expanded way more than I expected them to!

They frustrate me a little! I like some of the details on their bodies but the faces are odd and the pets remind me of LPS only the ones with the old, weird eye highlights… gah. I’ll probably want more of their clothes and I just wish I had someone who could wear their shoes (because I love their cute feet but they’re wider than most dolls?)

I kinda want one… I’m anxious they’ve also gone the blind box route for some of the dolls now. I don’t know what to think but I’m glad they’re doing well.

Also, Jojo is still ruling the toy aisles. Here’s her Hairdorable!

    Gah! She’s cute but I kind of hate how they stylized her pupils… it looks weirder than the typical Hairdorable, right? O_O;;;

They’ve also expanded more than I expected! I kinda want more of them and the pets but like many, I wish their bodies were bigger. It’s nice that their clothes could probably fit some of my 6″ dolls so if they ever release a clothing series, I’ll splurge on that in a heartbeat. I’m already kicking myself for not buying more of the #Snapstar clothes when I saw them at Wallmart.

We didn’t see all the BTS dolls, but saw a few! Definitely worth a look due to their unique faces and hairstyles.

I absolutely wanna see them in person! The hard part might be sticking with just one or two… They’re cuter than I expected and definitely affordable but I’m on a budget (and it doesn’t help I collect plushies too.)

Sorry, I didn’t mean to respond to so much but I just kept having more to say as I went along. XD

  4. I forgot to add, I also wish Skipper didn’t have the lavender stripes in her hair! It bugs me… It doesn’t look bad but I feel like it just isn’t always the best choice. It does stand out nicely though and I think that shade might’ve worked better than the purple they picked for that Fashionista. Sometimes I wish Skipper had the older dark blue stripes but it’s also a little odd. I guess I feel like the auto-inclusion of colorfulness doesn’t always suit her? I’m glad the babysitter inc girls have more options and faces. I bought the girl with the afro and want to get another one as well, the redhead or one of the brunettes, but I still have other fashionistas, Stacie friends, and Made to Move that I want so I keep putting it off, ha ha. Anyway, thanks for this series of posts! 🙂

      1. Yeah, I guess that’s why I feel the way I do. I grew up with Skipper in the 90s and although she was mostly(exclusively?) blonde back then, they did change her style up. The consistency of the current Skipper and Stacie releases means there’s no reason to get more than one, unless they’re more articulated or they’re in a set with something cool.
